Out of the blue, my light came on yesterday. I went to autozone and they gave me the code. I messaged my mechanic who said it's a bad cat. He said it costs hundreds to replace, then mentioned an "alternative" option for repair.

Forgetting the alternative for now, how do you replace the cat in a 5.3? How do you find compatible units? Is it a cut and weld in place? I've seen some "bolt in" pieces that look ready made for the truck. I have never played around with exhaust at all. The V8 TB sounds really good, no need for custom exhaust (other than a resonator delete).

Check around for a universal cat. I got one for my son's Sylvy (2.5" in/out) and had it welded in. I only replaced one as it was physically damaged and not a failure. In your case, yours is failing so I would replace both as the other is probably not too far behind. Although welding is better, you could cut the pipes and use band clamps.

I got this one as it was the cheapest here. You should have better luck in the US.
