I live at the beach. I can't escape sandy, salty corrosive air. After a while everybody's ride here sounds like George Jetson's. I replaced my idler pulley some months ago and now that nasty bearing noise is baaaaack. Tropical storm Andrea "helped" since the humidity was so high (I guess) the noise was louder than ever. It was suddenly obvious that the noise was on the left side facing the engine. I used a dowel (actually a wooden yard stick) to listen to the tensioner pulley - sounded smooth. The power steering pump sounded like "chuddiky, chuddiky, chuddiky". This is not the pump whine noise that other posters have described. This is a gravel-like grinding bearing-gone-bad noise.
Today the storm has passed and noise is almost gone - for now. I think I need to replace the entire assembly and the tensioner while I'm at it...
