Mismatched Harmonic Balancer

Hi All

I've made a mistake and hope it doesn't affect too much.

The vehicle is a 2005 but the replacement engine is a 2003.

I bought the timing cover set (gaskets and HB seal) for a 2005 with the step and shim. I then installed it, it's on the engine.
(I didn't pay attention at Rock Auto and because my cars profile is 2005 that's the kit they offered)

The balancer that came off the engine was the smaller diameter one with no step and no shim (pre 2004).

So now I either have to install the 2005 balancer onto the 2003 engine or pull the seal and order/install a new one that is correct for the 2003 HB.

So here is my QUESTION:

Can you put the newer design harmonic balancer on the older engine? Has anyone ever done this? Was the new HB design to correct a flaw that would make it an upgrade?

Jeff

I looks like it's OK to do this, I think, there is a poster in the FAQ that upgraded an even earlier 2002 HB right past the 2003 version to the 2004+ version so I think it'll be OK to upgrade from 2003 to 2005.

It won't be a problem as long as you have the seal that matches the HB.

That's what I was hoping to hear Mooseman, Thanks! I've got the proper seal installed for the newer, karger diameter HB and the dealership will have a new shim for me on Friday so I think I'm all set.
