So I am looking for an axle as I get ready to upgrade my XUV to a 4.10 form the 3.42 it currently has..

I can find the axles in various places, but no one can tell me if it has the G80 or a G86 or neither.

They are able to provide me with a VIN, is there an easy way to take the VIN and find out the options?

1GNET16S756183890 is the VIN I am currently researching.

Why would a 4x4 ext be likely to be G80?

i would think the ext makes it less likely for the G80, but it does mean it is the 8.6!

Don't all 4x4 have the G80?

I know one of the members here who's got a 4x4, ended up getting a G80 down the road, gave his old diff to another member, who I helped pick it up.

Found this on another site. Might be worth a try:

Wow, the much coveted 4.10 along with the G80! Grab the front and rear diffs!

Not all of them, the 04 TB EXT (4.2) 4x4 we fixed up for a family friend has the 3.42/G86. When I had my accident that totaled the TB EXT, I looked at a few XL's/EXT and most came with the G86 and 3.42's...it was really hard to just find the 3.73's alone until I settled on getting my Denali.

Hmmmm. My '02 EXT had the G80. There's no rhyme or reason.

Could be another GM thing? Never understood some of the base features they would include in one, but not the other. The diff/axle combos seem to be really scattered.

I already have the 4.10 front diff from a SS, been looking for a G80 rear from a ext/xl truck for a bit now..

This rear diff has 101k on it, but the yard only has the VIN, truck is long crushed (why I was looking for a decoder). Once I know winter is done, I might get it. Price isn't bad, but it's out of the salt belt Illinois. 300 delivered. Going to look a bit longer and see if I can find another.

It's in-between making a XUV SS, or that Aero. I'm leaning more towards the XUV SS. An XUV is already hens teeth, but an Aero...

I found one that's supposedly from an SS, and he's throwing in a couple of extras like the sway / panhard / drag links (-? they attach to the axle brackets) / what look like a pair of HD Bilsteins.

Here's the ad, if you're interested...

FWIW...he's located about 15min from me (no, I don't know him)

(on edit -- I found a *front* SS diff, too, if anyone else is looking for one...but that (different) guy wants $1000 for it...good luck with that!)

Couldn't you call a dealer with that Vin and ask for an axle quote or axle part number etc? They should be able to pull that info easily by Vin and would be none the wiser if you acted like average Joe asking for a quote lol, it's like a free over the phone decoder that just takes a little time.

I've always had a hard time trusting random online decoder services.

I second Mounces suggestion. When I did the sway bar bushings on the Envoy and Avalanche, they were able to go by my VIN to get the exact bushing size without crawling underneath to measure them.

Trailblazers other than SS did not have the G86 limited slip option available...

My mistake, I meant the others had the regular non g80 config. The 04 supposedly had the rear rebuilt and were told/given a print out saying it was a posi diff. Unless it was aftermarket, or they lied about it when the truck was purchased. 🤔

They had open or g80 locking diff. There were no other options except the g86 in the SS 9.5 14 bolt.

if it was a SWB non-V8 there is not even an aftermarket option.
