I’ve always thought it would be a a good idea to have a Durable, Seal-able View Port Bung welded right into the CAT Pipe ...just ahead of the front of the Catalytic Converter that would make it easy to inspect its ‘innards’ and perhaps even clean debris away from the opening where the Ceramic Cores are situated. Also to be able to Video and Photograph whatever stuff is down there (Fractured Ceramic Honeycombs…?) that might be causing the CAT to misbehave.

This set of Bung and Plug device looks like something worth adding into that pipe in the most advantageous position possible for the Port Plug to be removed and replaced as needed and having an easy time of snaking a 7MM Optical Tube Camera through that opening in EITHER direction to promote an easy Inspection of the CAT as well as the Cast Iron Exhaust Manifold… from the INSIDE. Possessing Modest Metal Working and Welding Skills will really help you here.

And if your CAT has been Gutted and the Downstream O2 Sensor is giving you fits and throwing Codes and IF there is room enough for this application to be tried… This problem might be solved by using THIS Stainless Steel Device:

Of course, I’m not a real advocate of doing this... from bad personal experience with noxious fumes via my Z28 way back when... and if your vehicle needs to undergo regular, a rigorous visual Smog Inspections and Fails due to the Discovery of a Non-OEM component being installed into the Smog Control System…in more than one way…. it could become a very expensive proposition. :>()

For anyone who is seriously interested in learning about TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) Welding… especially for creating Custom Exhaust Headers and Other Stainless Steel Builds and Applications… These Training Videos will cost you around 1/10th of what a Welding Trade School Tuition would; and just a fraction what it would cost you just for the Basic Training... let alone all of the Specialty Welding Tips and Tricks involving Stainless Steel that NOBODY ever talks about…
