how to access radio ID for XM radio?

I was wondering how to access the radio ID to get XM radio to work. I tried it with tech on the phone and I have XM that was never used but cant get to channel 0 or 1 to get the ID. is there a trick? I want to use XM and onstar for my wife since the winter is comming. any ideas? I searched for this link as well but could not find anything. Thanks

tHANK YOU Mooseman. saved me trouble I typed in th vin an it says I do not XM capeable but the PO had it and onstar. guess I may to start from scratch or just load many CD's since there are very few stations. TY again.
