DETROIT (AP) — General Motors is recalling nearly 340,000 big SUVs in the U.S. because their daytime running lights may not shut off when the regular headlights are on.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents poste on its website Thursday that having both lights on at the same time could cause glare for oncoming drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall covers certain 2021 Chevrolet Tahoes and Suburbans, as well as some GMC Yukons and Cadillac Escalades.

GM says it has no reports of any crashes or injuries caused by the problem.

Dealers will update software that controls the lights. Owners will be notified by mail starting Dec. 19.

Well at least for the headlights is just a software update. The battery pack problem they don't even have a solution yet. Guess they'll have to park them outside (where have I heard this one before?

Why is this a recall? What's wrong with the DRL staying on when the headlights are on? Other brands have the DRL on as long as the engine is running 🤔

Might be because you're not allowed more than 4 lights on at the same time. So if the DRL is separate from the headlights and it stays on, when you use the highs, that's a total of 6 lights. I know here you're not allowed to have more than 4 lights on. That's why fogs turn off when you put the highs on.

Except Hondas leave the DRL on when lows and highs are on. Weird. DRL is more an "accent" light I thought.

Might not be so much the number of lights on at the same time, but the total lumen s added together with the wrong beam focus. The DRL's on the new trucks might be brighter and more cosmetic for day use and would be too bright for night when added on top of the intended lows. What was it years back with halogens....something like 50 to of 55 watts max for lows each and a max of 100 on high each. DOT used to keep a good lid on this when lighting designs were simple.

Got a recall notice for the ford, DRLs could flicker. They make no specification on which can do it or anything and say the update is over the air at the dealer and should take 15 minutes to repair but the truck may need to be left for 48 hours to fix... Yes it seems like they really tried covering their ass on that one. :dielaugh:
