I just posted an alternate solution to the really difficult to remove front diff fill plug problem, but had a related question.
In the process of R&Ring my steering rack, I used this opportunity to (finally) drain and refill my front diff. However, when I found it difficult to reconnect the power steering pressure hoses at the steering gear, I chose to go the route of removing the CV axle to give me the room I needed.
You guessed it - when I removed the CV, I lost a bunch of my new front diff fluid.
I know the fill level is supposed to be the bottom of the fill plug hole, but since I was never able to get the fill plug out I had to resort to the above mentioned alternate solution.
And now that leaves me uncertain how close to the proper level I actually am now.
So the question is: relative to the bottom of the fill plug hole, how much lower is the bottom of the CV axle opening? I'd say I lost 1/3 - 1/2 quart with the CV out - might there still be an adequate amount left in the diff (I'm almost certain there is at least twice as much new fluid remaining even now, as the old crappy stuff that I drained out when I changed it a few days ago)
Any other thoughts?
