My friend took the resonator off of his 9-7x 5.3 and says that he can't perceive any difference, anybody out there to comment on this? I would like to remove mine and configure a dual exhaust only because the aftermarket exhaust people have decided that 5.3 people do not deserve dual cat backs.:frown:

Well really all it is there for is to reduce resonance (noise) so... Yea, I don't see it freeing up much of any HP, just look at that massive muffler sitting under there, thats where a big chunk of HP is really going...

But I am sure someone that's done it is going to say it does but really, Butt HP is different than dyno HP... :raspberry:

I'm not an expert when it comes to exhaust but I believe you can only do duals after the muffler. I have duals on my 4.2 but they're not true duals (Cat back) and they sound great. As for hearing a difference their is quite a difference HighVoltage posted a video on the OS and his truck sounded mean.

I've heard a 4.2 in person with the resonator delete, and there is very subtle to no difference at all in noise... I've also heard a 6.0L SS with the resonator delete and it was noticibly louder.. if your thinking in terms of HP numbers/gains.. don't... our factory exhaust across the platforms are very free flowing and doesn't rob much HP... until you start making stupid power, will an exhaust benefit you or net you some HP... the 5.3 motor is essentially the same as the 6.0.. so if you're going for sound, just chop off the resonator, replace your muffler and call it a day...

I'm more interested in appearance. The Denali rear valance has a lower profile which is cutout for the ehaust tip.A similar cutout could be made on the other side and the symmetry of it would I think look better.A little extra rumble would be nice too.
Pity that with two banks of cylinders we have to settle for pseudo duals:frown:

I cut mine off and it is a little louder. I do hear it inside the truck but it's barely noticeable.

Some people complain about the drone at highway speed. It doesn't bother me even if I do notice it.

The 9-7 sits lower but you can't see as much of the spare tire or resonator. I don't notice it enough to care to cut it off. It (the 5.3) already sounds good as-is in my ears.

Just for fun, take a look at the above article that talks about a $2800 mod package to the TB SS that added 40hp including a true dual exhaust and somehow the dual cut out of the bumper for the second exhaust. I tell you it bums me out that even the little Chevy Equinox and the Chevy Traverse and similar have dual exhaust tips in the bumper.

If I'm reading that article correctly, it is not true duals. It's called a dual outlet system.

I was wondering on that too. Doesn't make sense. I'm really wondering how they got the second cut out on the bumper.

I believe SLP (or someone) sells a bumper with dual cut outs.

yes, there are vendors that sell the new rear valance with dual cutouts... i think hes on here as well...

edit: a rear valance for the SS platform... i havent seen a new bumper/lower valance for a regular TB or Voy or 9-7

Just wondering what you ended up doing. I don't care about true duals either, however if one can remove the can, re-route some pipe, cut out the valence, and add tips mostly for appearance, I'd be interested in doing this too.
If you have pics too that would be great!

I ended up liking it the way it is for now. I might do something if I have any issues with the present system. Now that I have the AFM defeated I could possibly adapt a dual system designed for an SS and wouldn't have to worry about the ricer sound in AFM mode....Mike.

I just bought new muffler and res made by walker exhaust systems for 228. Far cheaper than the 700 and 500 for the two gm parts

Can you specify the part numbers for the Walker products? Also can you take a picture of this setup? I'd like to see how the pipes are routed and where the resonator is installed.

Thanks in advance!

Walker #'s are 55272 for the resonator assembly and 21409 for the stainless SS quiet flow muffler. Advance auto actually has 20% off for online orders and are mailed to your home. Couldn't find that set up cheaper anywhere else. After installed in will send a pic

Sure. Didn't realize it wasn't installed. When you send pictures please comment on the sound too.

Just saw that this is not a dual system.
Thanks

Have a look inside the muffler if you still can. Does it neck down? Others have commented that on Walker mufflers for the I6, the size is reduced inside the muffler.
