Actually it improves coolants Ability to transfer heat,

As hypnotoad said all it does is makes available a greater surface area of both the block and radiator. It keeps the liquid from forming air pockets which insulate. The only reason to use it is in racing where you want to use the smallest radiator possible to save weight.

I'm also curious. Before I put an asset as expensive as my engine at risk of a claim like that, I'd love to evaluate some proof. Can you offer any links to persuade folks who believe the GM engineers weren't all idiots? Or your engineering credentials in the coolant studies area? Thx.

I worked in the parts business years ago and got my hiney chewed by a well known radiator shop for telling a customer to put Dex Cool back in his GM after flushing. After asking why, I was escorted to the back room, where I was given a front row seat to an experiment where two aluminum foil pans one with p-stone, the other Dex were heated up on a hot plate. After quite a while the pan with the Dex had turned black and had pinholes that were beginning to seep liquid. I left convinced, then two years ago I helped replace a water pump on a buddies Silverado with 38000 miles. The bearing was seized and black like it had been cooked. We went to the stealer since it should have been under warranty and they gave him the run around and didn't end up fixing it. He always used Dex. I got to thinking "Gee, if the dealer and manufacturer are so adamant about strict use of this stuff, there must be more to it than longevity." We decided to switch the truck to G12 (VW/Audi coolant) and now he's pushing 200K on the same pump. I don't know, could have been a bad pump out of the gate, or the manufacturer could be trying to create repeat business. You can use whatever you want in your truck, but I tend to find that the auto-aftermarket and individuals usually know their vehicles best.
