Do Not Swap Modules between GM Vehicles having the “Global Architecture”

The GM TechLink Article:

"GM’s diagnostic strategy does not support the practice of swapping control modules during the course of diagnosis or in order to expedite a repair. Features in today’s vehicles are increasingly software-configurable. They can affect vehicle safety systems, anti-theft systems, performance, and customer personalization information."

Pretty common nowadays with a lot of manufacturers. They say it is for vehicle security but I’m pretty sure it is to make it harder for non-dealers to do the work.

To take things a step further, some (mainly Ford at the moment but some newer GM too) make you have a security credential through NASTF if you’re programming outside of a dealership. Here’s info if you’re curious about NASTF. https://sdrm.nastfsecurityregistry.org/register

I have gone through all this and have the credential. It is worth it because I make keys and I’m starting a shop this summer and will be doing more module programming and key making. It is easier on the back than wrenching all day long.

Times are changing…

Thanks for adding the NASTF Link... THIS is Why YOUR Customers LOVE You, Man... Because you 'Stay Up by Keeping Up' with whatever "The Stealerships" have thrown at you over the years.

I'm also hoping that the investment you made a while back on getting your New Key Making Machine as an adjunct to your other Automotive Repair Skill Sets... keeps them coming back to your Shop. :>)
