Onto the next project, which should have been delivered today. Will see when I get home.

Kia.jpg

Its a 2004 Kia Amanti with 120k miles on it. Bought it for $525, plus auction fees. Grand total $1011. As far as I can tell, it needs a flex pipe, headlights polished, and nothing else. You can see a bit of rear bumper damage, as in the paint is cracked. But nothing is physically wrong with it. It has cold air, literally brand new tires (still have stickers), and it runs and drives. It might need a timing belt, but I am not sure on this one yet.

The great unknown is the flex pipe. One flex pipe is a $20 repair, plus weld. The other flex pipe is non-repairable, and is a $300 replacement.

If this link doesnt work, let me know, but it should.

Second car is for my MIL/SFIL... They got themselves screwed by a car they extremely overpaid for. They paid $20k for a 2011 Buick LaCrosse with 124k miles. It has the absolutely worst engine, the 3.6VVT. It developed a miss on cylinders 1, 3, and 5. This means the engine has to come out, and timing chain system rebuilt. A bill of about $6-15k, assuming the engine is good. Its making a noise that tells me that it isnt good.

So they spent $20k on a car, that on a good day might sell for $9k, with no warranty, and are completely screwed on the loan. I cant help them there, but I can buy a car for them, and put it in my name as the lien holder, and let them buy it off me.

They are going to file for bankruptcy, this is not the first car in the last 5 years they have screwed themselves on, plus other financial issues. They need a car, as he is on dialysis, and they also have a daughter/grandchild that depend on them.

How do people just keep screwing themselves like this, and think everything is h0nkey dorry? It just baffles me.

What pisses me off are the ones doing the screwing. Karma will eventually get them. Good luck with this latest build.

Reminds me of a Hyundai Sonata (may be same). My mom had one but with the 4 banger.

The Amanti did share a platform with a Hyundai, the XG350, Although the Amanti was 2 inchs longer.

Just got delivered to the house. No one told us or anything. Wife went out to get something out of the car, and its sitting in the driveway...

Headlights polished.. One came out like new, the other... Well its better than it was. $15

Flex pipe wasnt the problem, someone stole the catalytic converter. New one is ordered. $190. They also cut the resonator pipe, so wont know how much pipe I need until I get the Cat reinstalled.

Took each wheel off, someone had replaced the brakes within the last 10k miles. Rotors had no lip, and pads were nice and thick! Tie rods were tight, stabilizer links were in good shape. Rear upper knuckle bushing on both sides was not where it is supposed to be in the mount. There was no play. So not sure what to make of it. Its kind of a bad design really if I am being honest.

Tires on all 4 corners are new, like still had stickers on them new. Not quality tires like I would buy, but good enough for now.

Front/Rear struts a fairly new. Still has readable aftermarket stickers on them, and are not leaking.

Windshield is fairly cracked out, will order one of those once my credit card comes back from the "I spent to much" phase! Safelite shows its $240. So not bad.

Drivers rear power door lock motor is seized. Not going to worry about it.

Checked the timing belt. No frays, cracks, or anything else. Should be able to get 2-3 years out of it before having to worry about it.

Pulled the front plugs, they had been replaced at some point in the last couple years, but looked like they were burning right, and the boots and wires looked good. Have the new owner do that when they do the timing belt.

Check Engine Light was for a EGR Valve, which has been replaced by the prior owner 3 times in the last year. So I doubt thats the problem. Going to try to reset the MIL, and send it thru emissions. My research on this shows that the problem is that when they replaced the EGR valve, they didnt put in a EGR Jet Valve, which is no longer made. The jet valve makes it so the EGR opens and closes more slowly, instead of snapping one way or another. So it should take a bit of time to set a MIL light. As long as I can get it to pass emissions, before the light turns on, I aint going to worry about it.

Full rebuild, should be right around $1600. Inspection is slated for late November.

Catalytic Converter installed. Heated windshield installed on Saturday.

Temp Tagged. Inspection on Wednesday.

Hopefully all goes well.

It drives stupid well. Has a few clunks, but what should I expect for a 22 year old car, with 120k miles.

Selling it to my MIL/SFIL on the 17th for a little over what I got in it.
