Some people you’ve encountered in your lives just don’t seem to get the idea of: ‘comic books’. But for those of us who DO, our interest in their amazing ability to mix high quality literary work side by side with Graphical Story Telling as the perfect blend ...can never be beat. Nothing will convince us otherwise of their unending fascination and we bear the mental marks upon us who’ve really felt what the hidden power of what Comic Book Story Telling can convey.
You can do ANYTHING in a Comic Book Story… and this was well determined from the very outset of their ‘Hero vs. Villain’ inspirational graphical published tales as far back as the Turn of the Century. From the English ‘Penny Dreadfuls’ found in London’s Paper Weekly additions to the American ‘Old Wild West’ Stories brought to life by imaginative writers and illustrators ‘back east’ when concocting ‘The Good Guy vs. Bad Guy’ stories of The Wild West, these all share a common thread. Imagine how much more popular the Original Hero and Sidekick ancient stories of ‘Gilgamesh and Ikidnu’ … or even Homer’s ‘The Iliad and The Odyssey’ writings would have been, had they been introduced as Color Illustrated Comic Book Stories.
To this very day, Comic Books continue to be a ubiquitous entertainment; perhaps even better now after being brought up to more modern standards with the use of high end Computer Graphics to improve upon the Illustrations and enhance their impact One Frame after Another. But the “Standard” (12) Cent Comic Books from DC and Marvel Comics beginning in the 1940s to the $1.75 versions from the 1990s have found greater competition from a more serious ‘Comic Books for Adults’ company called “Dark Horse Comics”.
THESE productions include using all manner of established SCI-FI Movies and Television Series as libretti to expand upon the limited number of “Block Buster Movies” created to satisfy a jaded audience and expand their unique Universe into the much Darker Corners of Story Telling. H. P. Lovecraft, Herbert George Wells and Robert Louis Stevenson… Hell, even Mr. Charles Dickens, himself as the creator of the Illustrated ‘Pickwick Papers’ under his Nom de Plume ” of “BOZ” would be completely surprised at the universal acceptance of these creations and their impact upon “The Comic Book” as Pure Modern Art and Vibrant, Imaginative Stories.
Dark Horse Comics has emerged with a Pulse-Pounding reputation for creating TRUE Horror Comic Books with a variety of well established story-lines that include Super Heroes and Ultra Villains alike. But their standout publications seem to center around the Ridley Scott’s Movie, “ALIEN” and Jim Cameron’s follow on version called “ALIENS” as grist for a bloody story-telling mill that truly makes the grade for extending what might have started on the Hollywood Screen… but which continues to fascinate and terrorize aficionados by means of page-turning Grisly Comic Book Stories and Art.
To get a sense of what the fuss is all about… You can find the Dark Horse Comics such as ALIEN: LABYRINTH available on Amazon as consecutive multi-comic productions worth the $5.00 a piece price tag for these “E” Ticket Rides into Hell.
