CV Shaft Stuck In Disconnect...

Hey everyone,

Exactly 3 months ago I rebuilt my disconnect and replaced the CV shaft. About 2 days ago the inner CV joint boot failed so today I got the replacement CV shaft (under warranty) and went to take the old one out...and its stuck! like really stuck...beating the S**T out of a pry bar didn't work, so I decided to take the CV shaft off with the disconnect (which came out easier then ever thanks to a ton of anti-sieze I had on there) and open it up and try to force it off from the inside...well that plan failed miserably, so here I am with my tail between my legs and a CV shaft thats no good still stuck on the outer housing of my disconnect via that damn splined gear...so what the hell do I do now?

How do I get the gear off of the CV shaft? I really didn't think the snap rings were that tough...

any input is appreciated

thanks,
-Rob

With the disconnect on the truck, you tried the prybar wedged between the disconnect snout and the CV tripot and beating on the bar with a 3-ish pound hammer to pop it out? Not sure how you were using the prybar which is why I ask.

Yes sir, that's exactly what I tried...

Brought the CV shaft and disconnect (obviously still stuck) to the local auto parts place, they have a shop in the back...and about 20 mins later it came apart...he had to use a press!!!

And since the CV shaft was a defect and under warranty he didn't charge me a penny.

The new one went in without a flaw and I got to re-grease my disconnect so I guess it was worth it...kinda...
but damn that snap ring was a mother!

I've never liked the pry bar method, I bought a fork that slides behind the tripod and then attaches to a slide hammer. One good tug always pops them out for me
