I want to avoid the HVAC actuators recalibrating. Will this be sufficient?

Maybe but preventing the recalibration may just delay the inevitable. If it's destined to die, it will eventually.

That won't work because the cigarette lighter is only an output, not an input port. The most it will accomplish is to try to charge whatever battery you have hooked to it.

You can try a plug from a 12v source to your OBD connector. It might work.

That gizmo looks like it connects to a battery while the cables from the main battery are disconnected. It should work as long as the current draw doesn't exceed 20a.

It will work fine. You don't even need a "large back up battery"... I have an equivalent "dongle" that just uses a 9v battery. Make sure that nothing is plugged into any of the lighter outputs and the ignition switch is off. I have changed vehicle batteries that has taken an hour or so and things were fine there after with all radio settings save and no "banging" of vent actuators.

However, as soon as you open a door, the interior lights will kill that battery as well as modules that will wake up just by opening the door no matter if the lights are off. Open the door, lock the door catch with a screwdriver and wait 10-15 minutes for stuff to go to sleep before disconnecting the battery with that dongle plugged in. Make sure the positive battery cable doesn't touch ground as that will also erase your memory.

Or can I just hook up like this to a 2 amp trickle type battery charger or another 12 volt car battery?

Like this. Red to positive. Black to body ground.

That should work if it's a dumb charger. Smart chargers may shut off when it doesn't detect any voltage.

Thats a good point Mooseman. I think I'll just jump to my Toyota battery for back up power while doing the new battery swap. Thanks for the heads up. UPDATE. Battery swap successful. No complications.

My set up for this includes a jump starter/power pack

and an OBDII memory saver

There are cheaper ways to go, but this is what I use.
