"Apparently, some thieves have taken to hiding an Apple AirTag somewhere on a vehicle for purposes of tracking so they know exactly where to locate the vehicle at a later date."

Another reason to hate Apple.

I just checked and there's an AirTag scanner for Android now that I'm paranoid for my truck!

Or train my dog to sniff for them.

Checked the AirTag out and it's actually pretty cheap, like $40CAD. My wife and son have iPhones so I could use it myself as a theft tracker. Who says I can't use it against them? Only thing though is that they updated it to start beeping once it's separated from the phone between 8 and 24 hours. Should be enough time to be able to find the chop shop.

I use these as cheap secondary trackers for all my cars, in the event the primary wired GPS trackers are defeated or fail.

The speaker can be removed to prevent any audible alerts to their presence.
They are so small and wireless, they can be hidden anywhere.
Battery lasts about a year.

Well, so much for anti-stalking but good for us for non-nefarious reasons.
