I am currently looking at buying a 2005 GMC Yukon Denali.. Couple Questions.. The build sheet is below.

Why are most Denali trucks built without a G80?
Does this truck have AFM/DOD? Its an LQ4. If I am reading this right...
... Its a 24x engine, which I think means no AFM/DOD. But I dont know this for sure.
This is the first time I have ever seen a AL4 suspension (firm ride), are we talking about different spring rates only then?

I like the truck the truck a lot, but there are good and bad.
69k miles
11k price tag
Some aftermarket Kenwood headunit that would get swapped out for a factory unit

Rims - I hate
1

Tires - I really hate

Interior is clean as a pin
00T0T_eHljb85zNfmz_0950c6_600x450.jpg

Exterior has some of the standard, for Colorado, hail dings
Clear Bra is peeling
Looks to have some K&N intake tube and filter on it, but its just hanging where the intake bucket is supposed to be, would need to be replaced for factory I think.
00Y0Y_bt33rliHeeoz_0g80c6_600x450.jpg

No oil, tranny, diff, or anything, leaking
Heater isnt working (dealer is going to get that fixed)
Floor vent is not working

Thought? Opinions?

Low miles is a plus.
Paint makes me wonder what was so bad they needed new paint. Bodywork/damage/accident?

I edited my post above about that, its not likely a repaint. The VIN-Decoder was wrong. 16U is Greystone Metallic, so it looks to be original.

Edit: Another thing I dont like is that every light on the truck has been replaced with LED or HID. So the tail lights dont function correctly (running lights turn off completely until the turn signal is turned off). 2 Front marker lights are on their way out, flashing constantly.

The LQ4 did not have DOD so no worries about that.

Yeah, those rims suck but those tires would give any sane person a monster headache. So those would be an additional expense. You could probably find a nice set with tires on CL or Marketplace and sell these. The lights shouldn't be too much of a hassle to swap back to stock as well as the air box instead of that HAI.

It is strange that it would have AWD and no G80 or G86. If it bothers you, you could have one installed. It probably has the 9.5" diff though behind that 6.0L so that could be an extra cost. Wonder if it has the part time or full time AWD.

Why have such a hate for aftermarket radios? I don't think there's anything with GPS for that year if you want anything decent. I had a stock GPS unit and quickly ditched it for an Android unit just for the bluetooth alone.

Make sure it has good oil pressure when HOT. If it drops to around 20psi, it could have an issue with the pickup seal.

The radio thats in it does not integrate with the BOSE system thats in it currently (missing one of those module things I am guessing). I have 1 LUX Nav unit, 2 NON-LUX Nav units, and 1 NON-LUX 6 CD. Plus the NON-LUX 2 disc 9-7x nav unit in my XUV. Just a matter of VIN clearing. Add a bluetooth module, and its done. The only thing I am worried about is what all in the radio system has been messed with. It sounds like ASS!

We are heading back down on Saturday to look at it closer. Going to ask the dealer if I can take out the Kenwood, and drop in one of my factory units, and test for function. If it sounds like stock, I know its just a matter of aftermarket integration, and I should be good.

I dont remember what radio codes I need to look for on the build sheet to know which radio I need.

Most of the 6.0 AWD Denali's I have found dont have the G80/G86. Dont know, or understand, why?

Real nice truck, price is a bit high.
I thought that too.. But if you shop my market, apples to apples, its actually about right. I can find other Yukon Denali's in the area, for cheaper, but every one of them has 180k or more miles. and they are asking right around 8-10k. If I was interested in a LWB/XL model, there are more options, but I definitely dont want a XL.

Yes, I am looking nationwide.

I will admit, there are certain options I am being picky about. Has to have 2nd row captains chairs. Not Pewter in body color. NO DOD/AFM. Close to stock on all options (wheels, tires, radio, etc) as I can.

This is the one I am looking at, for comparisons sake..

And the comparisons..
2004 Yukon Denali with 180k - 9000
2005 Yukon Denali with 171k - 9000
This is the closest comparison I can find, 2005 Yukon Denali with 127k - 9000

Even the Escalades are still up there in price, and miles.
2005 Escalade with 177k - 9000
2003 Escalade with 149k - 8200

The Tahoe's dont typically come with 2nd row captains chair, but I am looking.
2004 Tahoe with 210k - 8000

My choice would be 69K, that low mileage justifies the price... :twocents:

Saw this last night but decided not to jump out of bed to go write 'As The Denali Rolls'...

Working backward a bit... as long as the mechanicals match the odo... I think you found the best of what's available, and it's the one I'd shoot for, if I were in the market. A premium has been added for mileage (guessing owner #1 never drove it (senior-?), and #2 was a younger guy who decided to mod the truck up, maybe got in over his head).

Not sure if they're negotiable on price, but they acknowledge in their ad that those tires aren't going to be bearable on the highway. See if they'll discount $5-600, for the price of a new set of shoes. And, yes, I'd replace the wheels. The ones on there now will require low profile tires (good for handling, bad for comfort). If he has 17's to put back on at no cost to you, go for it, even if those tires are on their last legs. Because those are six-lug, your selling options are a bit more open, if you wind up taking them home.

A side note on the front suspension -- it's torsion bar, like the HD trucks. Which will ride a little rougher than conventional springs, but if it's acceptable to you guys, then it's all good. Seeing that, I was a bit surprised to see that you had six-lug axles -- I figured it'd have been easier for GM just to build out an HD driveline for you. But they got fancy b/c of all the Denali goodies they wanted to throw in. And since fully 50% of all GMC trucks are in Denali trim, it's a win-win for them. Customers like the styling / amenities; GM likes the profit margin.

The rear suspension is spring, but it's also self-leveling (G69). Not sure what that entails, but do your homework. If it's shocks, they'll be hella expensive (I have a similar function set on my Sierra, and they price out at > $500/ea, front & rear). I was able to put different front ones on and not trigger any dash lights (still have to do the rears). YMMV.

Engine - As said before, no worries at all about the LQ4, and at less than 70K miles, it's got years of life left in it. If you want to see the internals, just head on over to my build thread. Downsides? It's a bit thirsty, as you know. Low compression (9.5:1) and a conservative cam profile give you torque, but don't bother winding it out. It can be woken up with a tune; GM built / tuned them for durability, so there's power to be had, if you want it. BTW, if you decide to ditch the CAI, let me know. I dislike them, but one may be needed for mine, long-term (I'm good at buying parts and stashing them for later!) <insert squirrel emoji>

Transmission - Well, it's a 6x, not an 80 (which surprised me), but at least it's a 65. At first, I wondered why they wouldn't just throw the 80 in, and I figured it out later on (packaging / room). As long as you're not planning on making this into a tow vehicle, the 65 will be fine.

Rear axle -- First, the good. You've got a 3.73 in there. Unfortunately, that's where it ends.
Yes, it's an open diff. The reason why, is because the 'locker' is built into the transfer case. Instead of the New Process t-cases we're used to, you get a Borg-Warner 4485 (RPO NR3). Single-speed, AWD, with a full-time 40/60 torque split f/r.
I have no idea on potential issues, but:
- You're likely stuck with the open diff in the rear axle.
- If it goes south... cha-ching. It's a must-fix part (can't just disconnect the front propeller shaft), and while NP t-cases aren't cheap, I imagine they're cheaper & more readily available than a B-W 4485.
That's also why you likely got the 4L65 instead of the 80, as the 80 is longer (see above re: packaging / room).

On this truck, that is the ONLY thing I see on it that gives me pause.

Your truck has a hydroboost unit (I could see it from the pics you posted.) Be aware that they can leak (there's a rectangular weep hole on the underside -- if it's wet, it won't be long before you have a nice leak going.) Repair kits are available, but the one I got didn't work (in fact, it leaked worse), so I wound up putting a new unit in. Not difficult.

Note: If you lose the unit, it affects braking *and* steering. In the case of the brakes, you'll get about 2 stops before the reservoir runs out, and lose the power function. It takes a LOT to stop the truck, if you lose the power assist. Similarly, the loss of P/S may make the truck inop, if this is to be the wife's DD. Just a word of warning (for her; you know how to work it so she doesn't think it's going to 'break tomorrow). But let her know that it's different.

I'll guess that because of the HB, you also have the old-school recirculating ball, and not R&P. I like the idea of not losing a steering rack, but there *is* a bit more play in the wheel.

(seeing the hydroboost, along with the 6.0L, the torsion bar suspension, the trans temp gauge in the dash... it's an interesting mix of HD and 1/2-ton parts that's in that thing).

Radio -- In most cases, I'd say go aftermarket. But in this case, I think you're making the right move with going back to OEM. Because of how it sounds now, don't be surprised if the PO cut the harness plugs off to accommodate the Kenwood. So you'd have a rats' nest of wires to lengthen / connect up to your stereo. I wouldn't bother reacquiring the plugs, if they're gone.
This also has a rear-entertainment system (great for the kiddos; dual-screen, too). I'm not sure if there's any integration between the radio and the RES, but if there's any glitches, putting the OEM radio back in may help. Do bring a DVD (not blu-ray) and make sure the RES works OK. If not -- more discounting (you can put in an updated aftermarket if you like - Panny makes some damned good products, but as you probably know from the GMT360s -- these DVD units can fail.

BTW, the kids will be in the lap of luxury with the 2nd-row bun warmers, watching their DVDs (pic is in the CL ad - controls are in the rear of the center console).

The lighting (front markers) -- there may be a compatibility issue with the relay, making those lights blink haphazardly. If that's the case, adapters are available which should make the marker lights behave better. Also, FYI -- if you go back to a conventional lamp, the front markers are known to burn out the sockets, as they're used for DRL. I replaced mine; both were in various stages of burning / melting. They're cheap / easy to replace.

I think that's about everything. If you want more on that fancy t-case, here's a site that has some info (which they copied from a GM full-size forum, along with Alldata.)
Note that if you click that link, and you have an ad-blocker, you may want to use it.

Continue to do your homework, but again -- I think that's the pick of the litter. Good Luck! 🤞

I do plan on Towing, but only lighter loads. Enclosed snowmobile trailer with 2 sleds, or 3 ATV's. Other than that, its going to be a daily commuter, and family hauler for trips, and cabin excursions.

I found a set of 20" Denali wheels, with 60% Michelin tires for 500 bucks.

The dealer said he installed the radio, and he just used plug in style adapters, no wires cut. We shall see.

Oh man, that hurts. I feel for you.

Two words I use when I find a unicorn at a dealer, but not quite ready to pull the trigger...
"Refundable Deposit"

Preferably with a credit card. Just get a receipt from them, and make sure it says that it's refundable. $500 should hold any vehicle for a few days (at least it has, for me). They're generally happy to do it, as the salesperson gets to count it against his quota, immediately.

If they give you any trouble refunding the deposit amount, a call to the card issuer will straighten that out quick, once they find out no goods / services were exchanged. Never has happened to me, but I know I'd have recourse, if I need it.

Probably that 6.0L has something to do with that as a lot of people are looking for the towing capability. I went through that with my Avalanche and got burned by it because I was basically in a desperate situation to get my trailer home after the Saab blew up.

Actually, its because most car dealers are sold out of new inventory. And the used inventory is also scarce. The chip shortage has really hit GM HARD. Volvo Heavy Trucks went on strike earlier this week, and Volvo doesnt even care, because they cant get the parts needed to finish 1000 trucks that are already sitting on the line. They are only going to go to the negotiating table when parts become available.

I only know the part about Volvo because my trucks were supposed to be built Monday, to be delivered on the 3rd of May. Got told Wednesday that its going to be late July, more likely August.

We had a truck, we retired last month, waiting for dealer to come pick it up.. I ordered new decals and plates for it on Monday. 787k miles on it..

Another pill I am having a hard time swallowing, why buy a NEW Yukon Denali at 80k (built like I want), when I can buy a NEW Infinity Q80 for 20k less (and its still built the way I want).

Mods.. Can you please change the name of the topic to - The Hunt Continues

So went out car shopping Friday, and Saturday... We are shopping new and used. I would prefer to find a low mile Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade. But they are being snatched up faster than you can make the appt to go look at them.. So this is what I looked at.
New
  • Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy - Same car as the Kia, but center console is much better. Cant get some of the options that the Kia had, which is odd. 48k
  • Kia Telluride SX Prestige - Price was right, center console dug into my right knee, BADLY. Looks so much better than the Hyundai Cousin. 48k
  • Genesis GV80 - WOW! this is a awesome BMW/Benz killer. Loved it.. Just cant justify the price tag for what its going to be. 3.5 Twin Turbo, 400 HP. Was an amazing vehicle to drive. But for the options I want, price tag of 72k. I will keep looking.
  • Infinity QX80 - I really didnt even want to look at anything from Nissan. This thing is just ugly to me. Nicely optioned thou. Still doesnt have the options I want. 60k
  • Nissan Armada Platinum - Same as the QX80, but cheaper. 55k
  • Ford Expedition Limited - For this price, I would hold out for the GM. Main turn off was the junktastic 3.5 motor. No option for a V8. No option for the diesel. 83k
  • Toyota/Lexus - Wont look at them
  • Honda/Acura - They really didnt offer anything that peaked my interest.
  • Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon - None of the dealers in my area have a well optioned model, of the current generation. Really want to look at a Yukon SLT/Denali. 58k/62k
  • Cadillac Escalade - Way to pricey, and OMG is that thing just ugly. 95k
Used
  • Uhm... Nothing. The market here is generally dry for the options I am chasing. I would have to travel 1000 miles west, or 2500 miles east, to get close to what I want.

What options are you looking for specifically? I would venture to guess NAV?

Not really. Now that I know the nuances of the GM vehicles, I know how to manipulate a Non-Nav to do what I want. And If I want nav, I have 4 Nav units sitting in my garage. Other brands have patches to add in what I want, similar to the GM trucks.

Must Haves - Rear buckets, premium sound, unmolested/unmodified suspension/motor, Stock wheels, full size SUV, LOW LOW miles, 4x4/AWD, 3500 towing capacity (or more)

Would likes - Nav, running boards, sunroof, floor shift, removeable 3rd row

Another 6.0 AWD without a G80. Has the same Borg Warner NR3.
Other than it doesnt have the rear buckets, or RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment), its optioned the way I want. Needs repair on one of the Pearl White running boards. Gotta drive 800 miles to get it, and the headlights need polishing/replacement.

Wonder if a G80 could be added? Not sure why it doesnt have one to begin with.

Nice.

I'm looking for a full-size also as a second vehicle. I'm sure you know this, but in case you don't.... I had no idea the 2nd row seats were fixed...won't slide fore and aft.

Does one half of the bench slide?

Gaining access to the rear, as well as the legroom is abysmal without the 2nd row buckets.

Just some food for thought.

If you won't need the 3rd row then not an issue.

Even with the LWB Suburban, ESV, XL, the 2nd row is fixed. I was truly shocked when I discovered this.

According to the owners manual for a 2005 Yukon, they are not fixed, they fold forward after a pull of a locking tab, or function just like the seats of a SWB, depending on seat configuration.

Page 1-8
Rear Seats Rear Seat Operation Entering or Exiting the Third Row Seats Yukon Denali: To enter or exit the third row seat, you must fold the second row seat down following the instructions later in this section. See “Folding the Seatback” under 60/40 Split Bench Seat on page 1-10. If you are exiting the third row seat with no assistance, do the following: 1. Reach over the second row seat and pull up on the strap loop. Then pull the seat cushion up and push it forward. 2. Next, push the seatback forward until it is flat with the floor. Be sure to return the seat to the passenger position when finished. Pull forward and push rearward on the seat to make sure it is locked in place. Yukon XL Denali: The passenger’s side of the second row 60/40 or rear bucket seat has an easy entry/exit feature. This makes it easy to get in and out of the third row seat. To operate the easy entry seat, do the following: 1. Lift the release lever on the back of the seat. 2. Tilt the seatback toward the front of the vehicle and the seat will release. 1-8 3. Pull (push if you are exiting the third row with no assistance) the seat forward until it stops.

Edit: Sorry mis-understood. No they dont slide. But I dont want the 3rd row anyways, so no major loss for me.

With a 3.73 gear, it should be fairly easy to find a rear diff from a Tahoe, Sub or Yukon with G80 but would have to be the 9.5" to live behind the 6.0L. Wonder if it's because of the full time AWD they don't put a G80 or G86 in these? However, the TBSS has a G86 with the AWD. Strange. There should be a way to put a locking carrier in it.

And it has the ever popular (and failure prone) air suspension. If it's similar to what was on my Av, the air shocks blow out and/or the compressor self destructs. Mine will always have the "Service suspension system" message on the DIC on startup. Something to check.

Check the oil pressure. Even though it doesn't have DOD, it can still have issues there.

That's exactly why. The B-W t-case has a planetary gearset; it's what provides the locking functionality. So you'd most likely have to replace (or at least remove) the Borg-Warner (and I know TollKeeper needs 4 wheels providing traction out there in CO, so we're really talking 'replace').

Could it be done? I'd imagine so -- there's a lot of 4WD pickups of the same generation running around. Cost? Who knows (I'd guess new f-r driveshafts as well, along with the t-case and the rear axle). Oh, and the new (additional) electronics to shift into the different modes (which might require PCM / BCM massaging - ?) Add all that up, and it's probably a reason why I didn't run across "t-case retrofits" when I was looking up info about the B-W unit. Hopefully, it's also an omen that the Borg-Warner is fairly robust.

So... to reiterate... you have limited slip - but it's in the t-case. Refer to post #10. That's why the rear diffs on these are open.

This also has the front electronic suspension (in addition to the air suspension in the rear).

I'm a bit surprised at the 2nd row seating arrangement, but it *has* to move in some way, to allow entry / exit to the 3rd row. Yeah, it would be easier with captain's chairs. And my intuition tells me you'd really like to have those. Maybe the RES, too -- but that can be done aftermarket. I'm sure the captain's chairs could be too -- they have to bolt to the same mounts as the bench, I would think ?

I'm a sucker for White Diamond Pearl (from any mfgr), so thumbs-up on that. Remember that it's a 3-coat process (vs. the normal 2), so self-performed touch-ups may be difficult, and if you get a decent enough scratch, you'll probably be looking at a shop, for the best results.

17" wheels might not be sexy, but it's going to cost a lot less to put new shoes on it, when the time comes (and more choices, too). +1 in my book.

My handy-dandy conversion calc in my phone says 75 litres converts to.. 19.x gallons. That seems small (my LWB Voy has the 23 gal tank, and even my CCSB Sierra has a 26gal tank. Both are '03s, as well -- just like this 'Slade.
Check to see the fuel requirement for the Escalade's LQ9 (premium required? E85 capable?) I know compression is higher, due to the flat top pistons (10.5 or 11:1; I forget). And it might (?) have a little hotter cam, vs. GMs other models with that engine, by light of being the Caddy? Just a WAG on my part, but worth checking into, as you might be filling that beastie up... a lot, given the above info. BTW, no LQ9 has AFM / DOD (it's a Gen 3 LQ4 with different pistons, rods and cam; maybe a HV oil pump? But otherwise the same).

So now I am sharply watching a 2003 Cadillac Escalade, with 87k miles. Build sheet below
Can't quite understand that LQ9, must be a pony motor to start the 6.0....

I don't get it. How can the transfer case change the operation of the differential?
An open differential is an open differential, regardless of what's connected to it.

There would have to be two driveshafts to the rear for that idea to work.

Yeah, me too, I don't get it. I'd probably go with a LS G86 on that, similar setup to the TBSS.

@TollKeeper , I don't know what VIN decoder you're using but it keeps messing up on the engine. LQ9 ENGINE,2.5L(2.5-2),L4,TBI ?

Free-Vin-Decoder.com

It messes up a few things, but generally its informative.

The dealer has taken 2 days on getting me additional pics, but I did finally get them. It shows one accident, and 18 events, but not much more detailed.

I get what he is saying.. So the TC does a 60/40 split rear to front, it fully locks when the clutchs spin more for one dif or the other. It doesnt do anything to the diff. Its still open.3.jpg4.jpg2.jpg1.jpg

Looks not too bad, just a few rough spots to fix. Those headlights should polish up nice. My son's 04 Silvy was the same and they came out good. With a clear film, they'll last.

Depending on price, I'd get this.

They are asking 7950. Thinking about offering 7200 out the door (dealer fees, and everything else). Its just 1000 miles away, so that means flying out, and driving back.

You'd have to factor the cost of that flight and hotels into this. Still not the best time to fly right now even if vaccinated, ticket prices are probably still ludicrous.

Unless I am seeing things wrong, It looks like this transfer case was borrowed from the Chevy Silverado SS? Its a independent TC, with no electrical plugs, except for the tailshaft speed sensor.

Got a flight planned, but not booked, one way, for 30 bucks....

No hotels, unless a breakdown occurs. Drive straight thru. Be about 9 hours. Its only 650 miles (thought it was further).

According to Edmunds, it has a 26 gallon tank, good for 390 miles highway. And its regular unleaded, no premium.
