4wd disconnect axle

Having a senior moment or two. Removed the 4wd disconnect and forgot which way the axle shaft goes through the oil pan. Is it the long spline end into the differential and short spline end into the disconnect? Or the other way? Seems to me the short spline end gores into the disconnect. Thanks.

One end has a threaded hole. That threaded hole goes to the disconnect end (used to thread a bolt into to aid in removal of the shaft).

Thanks. Got it back in. Now just waiting for the new disconnect to arrive.
