:frown:What would cause my number 5 piston to hit the spark plug and put a hole in it?
What are my options?
Anyone have a lead on a used engine?

A hole in a piston is likely caused by detonation if it didn't contact a valve. Does the engine turn over?

When I broke down on the road I tried to start it. It did turn over at first and then it stopped. Had it towed to a dealer and they couldn't turn the crank by hand as it was seized. They pulled the plugs and found the problem. They said they couldn't turn the engine forward. He did get it to go backwards but not sure how far. If I get a different engine what are the chances of getting it to turn far enough to get the bolts out of the torque converter?

Oh man, that absolultey sucks. :hissyfit:

How long have you owned the TB? 145k is far too early to give up the ghost. Did you ever hear detonation while driving? Normally during hard accelerate, or possibly when towing? It's hard to describe. Kind of like someone shaking marbles in a cloth bag..

Let me say thanks to all for helping me. This is an awesome site. As you can tell by my postings I am new to the site and not very experienced. When I have to have something done on my vehicle I pull out the repair manual and try to do it myself. How else can a guy learn.
I bought the TB new. I did hear that kind of noise recently when I first started the vehicle in the morning and at first acceleration. It wasn't very loud and I wasn't sure what the noise was. I thought it might be a bearing going on one of my pulleys. Is there a possibility I could replace parts on this motor and it would still be good? Although I am mechanically inclined, bear with me as I have no idea what I will be getting into.

I am sure you could probably replace parts, rebuild as needed, and come out ok. (might get into it and find out that the damage makes it not worth while to fix)

question is, what do you want? a project? sense of achievement? save some money? do you have a garage to work in, and alternative transportation while you work on the TB? want to buy or rent equipment to help work on the engine?

did you see http://gmtnation.com/f24/4-2l-i6-head-removal-engine-restoration-4425/

You'll almost certainly be better off getting a new/used junkyard engine - though they seem to be getting more expensive every day.
Never heard of a piston hitting a spark plug. Usually it's something else in the chamber: valve seat, valve head, ring land, etc. Doesn't really matter, at that point your engine is pretty much junk.

There are a few of us that are looking into head porting. You might be able to sell it if the chamber isn't completely fubar'd, but at this point I'd plan on selling it for scrap metal.
