Please can someone help me diagnose this problem. I can only describe it as a roaring sound. Seems to get louder as the RPM climbs.

Sounds like possibly your radiator fan is fully engaged due to a bad fan clutch, Mike.

Your fan clutch is definitely stuck "on"

This is a Pretty Good "How-To R&R The Fan Clutch and Water Pump (IF Necessary)"
Once the Fan Clutch and Shroud are out.... there are only Four Bolts holding them together as shown in the Red Circles in both images below. The Electro-Viscous Unit has a Funky Black PVC Pipe protecting the Motor Wiring and an Electrical Connector & Funky Plastic Insert (...the Edges of it are Razor Sharp and can Cut You....) and that is a bit of a PITA to get mounted back into the Black Plastic Shroud at the Upper Right Corner, when facing the Front of the SUV... after that... Everything will be JAKE,
