Yup that's right. Before joining the community I've always used 10w-40 oil in my cars. I use Castrol Magntetic 10w-40 in my tb.

Through my reading it says I should be using 5w-30 or 10w-30 If the first isn't available.

My engine runs smooth and been using this oil for the past 2 years with 189,000km now.

I'm gonna go with the right oil 5w-30 in my next oil change. I know this oil is better in cold climates but what about extreme heat?

Could I have potentially harmed my engine using 10w-40?

Yes w40 portion of the oil might be a little on the heavy side but I do not think that it would be harmful to your engine. 5w30 would be better though.

Agreed, stick with the manufacturers specs. I know my dad put 10W-40 in basically everything back in the day....I honestly believed that's all that was ever made.

The clearances in the engines helps determine the weight of the oil to reduce starvation. If there are other reasons then i'm not sure of them.

5W obviously deals with colder weather better. With the tighter tolerances getting the oil to flow faster is needed plus if its thinner consistency gets another fraction of a MPG then so be it.
