I think I'm missing nearly all of them! Seems like every time I touch one of those it breaks.

I usually don't bother putting them back. Unless some underhood gremlin actually pushes on the clip, this extra retainer is kinda useless. Click it in and tug to check positive retention. Extra lock not required.
