The black one is for the data bus signal. That is what triggers the radio to turn on and off. The big harness is the one with the speaker outputs. If you are putting in an aftermarket radio you have 2 adapters you can buy. The cheaper harness if you can find one for GM's that connects to that big gray one for like 15 bucks and requires you to tap into an accessory switchable source to turn the radio on and off with your ignition or you can get the higher end data bus interrupter that retains the factory features like chimes and RAP.

I did it without using the black connector. My chimes come through the speaker in the adapter and my RAP features work accordingly.

I think I'll be going with GMOS-01 ... there's a kit on ebay that comes with everything that I will need...

That is the same model I put in my co-workers Envoy. He didn't have anything special in his wife's truck. No onstar, steering wheel controls, bose, etc. Just the usual entry level radio. His truck has the higher end package with the BOSE, onstar, steering wheel controls, etc so it needs some more adapters to make it work but still can be done.

Whats the connector on ebay? i have XM, onstar 4 speakers no bose oe amp, no sterring wheel controls. just a basic oem stereo. looking to buy walmarts Dual Double din stereo XDVD256BT & Double din harness with the scosche interface (dont know which interface to buy). i want to keep the on/off with ignition, chimes/warnings & off when door opens.
