So my truck was badly in need of a good wax job. After washing I noticed how bad the paint was looking. I did the little plastic baggie test on the paint and wasn't very happy. I went ahead and got a clay bar kit and some wax and went to town. After about 6 or 7 hours I ended up with it looking better then I think it did when I bought it!

Thanks guys! There are some underlying surface scratches though, I'll try and get an up-close shot of the paint today to show you. I thought they were swirl marks and the clay would help them out. I think the previous owner must have used scotch pads to wash the thing.
Overall it looks great from a couple feet away, but when you get close you can see them. I don't know if I'm willing to try a rotary. I might be looking to have it taken care of by a pro. We'll see...

It's a simple test to see if it's time to clay-bar or not.
On a clean vehicle, with your hand in a plastic bag, lightly rub the paint.
If it feels like sand, time for clay.
