Does anyone know of a longer oil filter that has the same thread and 2.8 in diameter ? I have always used the fram 9837 but it is very short, i would like a longer one both for more filter material and ease of access.

The length of the filter is not as important as the QUALITY. The only Fram I use is the XG ultra synthetic as all others are basically made of cardboard. Just search on YT for Fram.

I just looked up the wix51522, it is a full inch taller than the Fram 9837. That should make reaching the filter a little easier. I do like that slip proof coating on the end of the Fram though.

Following Brian K's lead, I went to the WIX web site and searched and found that the following filters match our thread pattern and are more than 1 inch longer than the Fram 9837 filter while having the same gasket diameter.

Wix 51522, 51581, 51049, 51045

However, keep in mind the bypass and anti drainback valves. Both have to be present and the bypass at the same pressure. A silicone anti drainback is preferred over the rubber one, especially in cold temps.

If you want to see A LOT of oil filters cut open, head over here to see unbiased opinions. He doesn't have the one specifically for our platform however they are generally all built the same within the same brand and quality level.

What is the purpose of the anti drain back feature when the filter is oriented upward and therefore gravity can't empty the filter case? Am I missing something?

Well, they all have them despite that. Maybe the possibility of siphoning?

stopped using Frams long ago, saw a bunch of testing of cut open filters that landed me in the Mobil 1 Extended Performance then eventually I switched to the Royal Purple, those 2 filters tend to run about the same price locally and I'm no good at planning ahead of time for oil changes so I buy locally.

I'd go with the Wix 51522. It's specified for the 4.2 and seems to be a better quality filter. The others are mostly for older vehicles and seem like lower quality that may have bypass valve whereas ours do not need one as it's built-in to the adapter in the block.
