2008 TB Whine noise when driving

Have had my 2008 TB about a week and a half now, and find something new about it everyday.

Is it normal for it to make a whining noise when driving, or even when stopped but trans is in drive? The whine goes away when in neurtal, or parked. You shift to drive and the whine is back. Not super loud, but there.

My trans fluid is perfect level when hot, parked in neutral on flat surface.

2008 LS 4.2 4x4, 82k miles

Check power steering fluid as well. Should have nothing but basic engine noise at all times at idle. I do notice trans/tire noise at speed but not at idle.

Several, no, most of my GMs have had a whine. It has been the pump in the transmission. If it was a power steering whine it would change if you are stopped and put pressure on the steering by applying some left or right direction. If the noise doesn't change, it's the transmission pump. If it whines only when rolling, and gets less and less noticeable as it up shifts, and then is quiet in 3rd, the planetaries are worn.

Never had a transmission fail on me though. My old '89 Jimmy whined when I bought it, and was still going fine a decade and 100,000 KMs later.

I've never considered having the transmission looked at, I'll just wait to see if it gets worse. My current Envoy has whined for the last 4 years, no worse now than when I bought it.

Yes sir, engine running, in park on flat surface. Fluid level looked good.

It smells are little weird, not really burnt smell, but is dark red in color. I plan on doing the trans fluid flush procedure I saw a video from MAY03LT do this weekend. I bought the filter/gasket kit and lots of dex vi

Also replacing the water pump this weekend too. Fun stuff

Best thing would be to stick your head under the hood and listen. If you put the A/C to a low setting and fan low (not off), the compressor should cycle on/off/on. If it doesn't, have somebody bring the RPM up. Should help pinpoint the noise. Could be a slipping clutch or the compressor is dying. If the latter, do not wait for it to totally grenade as you will be looking at a major system flush job and condenser replacement as it cannot be flushed.

Yikes, sounds like something that should be taken care of right away!!

SIGH, mod money is going to have to be spent on repairs :frown::frown::frown:

I had a "whine " developing for about the last month and getting louder. More like a " waaaaa " that would rise and fall with the speed of the engine. I got up to speed and turned the engine off and coasted just to rule out something non-engine related - didn't hear it then. I traced it to something that the serpentine belt was spinning. I got my stethoscope out and started listening to various components and narrowed it down to something on the right side - either the alternator or the pulley right underneath. started with the easiest one first, the pulley. Turns out it was the pulley - obvious when I spun it in my hand. went to Advance auto and $18 later - nice and quiet. Got off easy that time !!
Replaced both wheel hub/bearings the day before - now no hum or " WAAAA ".

As far as as trying to pinpoint the noises from the posts above; if the pulley I removed didn't seem bad, I was going to take out the serpentine belt ( as it was already loosened ) and run the engine a few minutes just to hear it w/o anything spinning. I don't even know if that's something that can/should be done ! but I was going to try it anyway. Might be a way to at least rule a few things out. Last year, my A/C compressor had a bad bearing and was making an awful racket. Had to have that replaced before it grenaded and took out other items. If it's a power steering pump, you shouldn't hear it - if it's trans, it'll still be there.
Just a thought ...
